Big Pictures

What role does the visual play in the quantification of everyday life.?

Adrian Blackwell asked me to write a piece for Scapegoat, a Toronto based design journal. The piece, “Big Pictures” allowed me to reflect on a suite of recent projects that fit under the suddenly trendy and ubiquitous rubric of “data viz” including some thoughts about the nature of indexing, some anecdotes about my time consulting for ESRI, and a few speculations on the legacies of “big picture” thinking from Neurath to CYBERSYN.

Get a copy of Scapegoat here. Lots of great articles. Well worth your time and cash.
